I've spent 18+ years designing the data strategy and infrastructure for high-growth companies — SaaS, eCommerce and Marketplaces — and leading advanced analytics teams as Head of Data at companies like Colvin, Qualifyze and seQura.
For nearly two decades, my work has boiled down to answering the same request: "Mariela, I need a dashboard". And for years I built them. Endless tables, flawless charts, Looker, Tableau, BigQuery... until I noticed an uncomfortable truth: most of those dashboards ended up in the digital cemetery. Nobody used them daily, or they were out of date within two weeks.
That's when I understood the real problem. When a marketing team or agency asked for data, they didn't actually want more flickering charts. They wanted confidence to decide under pressure. To know, on a Friday at 5pm, whether to pause a campaign or double the budget — without fear of getting it wrong.
With the arrival of LLMs, I saw the opportunity to solve this once and for all. Not just by connecting a chat to your data, but by building an intermediate Semantic Data Layer.
What we used to call Data-Driven — filling screens with charts nobody looks at — now becomes Decision-Driven. Aklay combines the flexibility to ask in natural language with the pinpoint precision of traditional SQL queries. The result is the standard I was looking for: the AI interprets your question, but the answer is calculated using the fixed business rules of your database. No hallucinations, no calculation errors and no waiting to make an urgent decision.
I've spent years focused on digital data: at Adevinta, Nestlé and Exoticca I learned that buyer behaviour isn't linear — it's multichannel. I've built those connections working side by side with Marketing and Digital Product teams. And in pharma and fintech I learned what real analytics compliance means: where a mislabelled data point has real consequences. Aklay is born from combining those two worlds.
